Abstract
The effect of processing variables on the microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered Fe-Mn-Cr-Mo with low carbon concentration is presented. Pre-alloyed Astaloy CrM, low carbon ferromanganese and ultra-fine (CU-F) graphite were used as the starting powders. Mixture, with composition Fe-3%Mn-3%Cr-0.5%Mo-0.2%C, was prepared. Following pressing in a steel die at 660 MPa or 820 MPa, green compacts were sintered in a semi-closed container at 1120 and 1250°C for 60 min in a 5% hydrogen-95% nitrogen mixture or in air. During sintering in air, lumps of ferromanganese were placed with the samples in the container. Half of the samples were tempered at 200°C for 60 min in air. Sintered steels were mechanically tested. Yield strength (R0.2), ultimate tensile (UTS) and bend strength (TRS), toughness (KC) and hardness (HV 0.1) were recorded. To complement mechanical tests, metallographic investigations were carried out using optical microscopy. The best combination of mechanical properties was obtained for tempered Fe-3Mn-3Cr-0.5Mo-0.2C steel sintered in air at 1250°C in a semi-closed container containing a Mn source. This steel was characterised by: R0.2 - 459 MPa, UTS - 679 MPa, TRS - 1093 MPa and hardness 406 HV 0.1. The microstructures of both investigated steels were inhomogeneous, mainly consisting of ferrite (100-150 HV0.1) and bainite (300-500 HV0.1).
